About the Role

We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate De-escalation Mentor to join our team at a Primary SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in Portslade. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children who need additional emotional and behavioural support.

As a De-escalation Mentor, you will play an essential role in helping pupils manage their emotions, build resilience, and engage positively with learning. Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff, you’ll help create a calm, inclusive, and nurturing school environment where every child can thrive.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH needs

  • Use positive behaviour management and de-escalation techniques to manage challenging situations effectively

  • Encourage pupils’ personal and social development through positive relationships and consistent routines

  • Support pupils to re-engage with learning and develop coping strategies

  • Record incidents accurately and maintain safeguarding standards

  • Work collaboratively with class teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals


About You

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience supporting children with SEMH or behavioural needs (in education, youth work, or care settings)

  • Be calm, patient, and empathetic under pressure

  • Use de-escalation and restorative approaches confidently and consistently

  • Communicate effectively and work well as part of a team

  • Be passionate about helping children reach their potential
