We are looking for a compassionate and proactive De-escalation Mentor to join our supportive team at a Primary SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in Hailsham. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference to children who need additional emotional and behavioural support.
As a De-escalation Mentor, you will help pupils regulate their emotions, develop resilience, and engage positively with their learning. Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff, you’ll contribute to building a calm, safe, and nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
Support pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs (SEMH) in both 1:1 and small group settings
Use positive behaviour management and de-escalation techniques to manage challenging situations effectively
Promote pupils’ personal development, confidence, and emotional wellbeing
Build trusting relationships that encourage positive behaviour and engagement
Record incidents accurately and follow safeguarding procedures
Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, and external agencies to provide consistent support
The ideal candidate will have:
Experience working with pupils with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour (in education, youth work, or care settings)
A calm, empathetic, and patient approach
Confidence using restorative and de-escalation strategies
Strong communication and teamwork skills
A genuine desire to help children achieve their best outcomes
Training such as Team Teach, MAPA, or similar SEMH-related qualifications is desirable, though full training will be provided for the right person.
