About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated De-escalation Mentor to join our supportive team at a Primary SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in Heathfield. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of children who need additional emotional and behavioural support.

As a De-escalation Mentor, you will play a key role in helping pupils regulate their emotions, manage behaviour positively, and re-engage with learning. Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff, you’ll contribute to creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment for every child.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support children with social, emotional, and mental health needs in both 1:1 and small-group settings

  • Apply positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies to manage challenging situations calmly and effectively

  • Encourage pupils’ personal and social development through tailored interventions

  • Foster positive relationships and model appropriate behaviours

  • Keep accurate records of incidents and interventions, following safeguarding policies

  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to provide holistic support


About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour (school, youth work, or care background)

  • Strong empathy, patience, and resilience

  • Confidence in using de-escalation and restorative approaches

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills

  • A genuine passion for helping children achieve their potential

Relevant qualifications such as Team Teach, MAPA, or SEMH training are desirable, but full training will be provided for the right person.
