We are seeking a compassionate, proactive De-escalation Mentor to join our dedicated team at a Primary SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in Hastings. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young learners who need extra emotional and behavioural support.
As a De-escalation Mentor, you will help pupils manage their emotions, build resilience, and re-engage positively with their learning. You’ll work closely with teachers, pastoral staff, and external agencies to create a calm, safe, and supportive school environment.
Support pupils with social, emotional, and behavioural needs (SEMH) in small groups and 1:1 settings
Use positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies to defuse challenging situations
Develop pupils’ emotional regulation, communication, and problem-solving skills
Promote inclusion and engagement across all areas of school life
Record and report incidents accurately, following safeguarding and school policies
Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals
We’re looking for someone who is:
Experienced in supporting children with SEMH or challenging behaviour (in school, youth work, or care settings)
Calm under pressure, empathetic, and patient
Skilled in de-escalation techniques and restorative approaches
Able to build strong, trusting relationships with young people
Committed to helping every child achieve their potential
Relevant qualifications (e.g. Team Teach, MAPA, or SEMH training) are desirable but not essential — training will be provided for the right candidate.
A supportive and passionate school community in Hastings, East Sussex
Ongoing professional development and specialist SEMH training
The opportunity to make a lasting impact in children’s lives
Competitive pay and wellbeing support for staff
If you’re passionate about supporting young people with SEMH needs and believe in the power of positive relationships and de-escalation, we’d love to hear from you.
