SEMH Learning Support Assistant – Portsmouth

We are working closely with a well-established specialist provision in Portsmouth that supports pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The school has built a strong reputation locally for its nurturing approach, smaller class sizes and consistent staffing team – something they are incredibly proud of.

They are now looking for a Learning Support Assistant to join them on a long-term basis, supporting pupils who may have experienced disrupted education, trauma, or barriers to learning.

This is not a “sit at the back of the class” role – you’ll be fully involved in:

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 and small group basis
  • Helping students regulate emotions and re-engage with learning
  • Building strong, trusting relationships over time
  • Supporting behaviour in a calm, consistent and proactive way

The school day is structured, with clear routines and strong leadership support. Staff work closely together, and you’ll be given guidance and direction – but also the autonomy to build your own relationships with pupils.

Role details:

  • Long-term position (temp to perm potential)
  • Full-time and part-time options available
  • Immediate start or from May half term
  • £93 per day

What the school is looking for:

  • Someone resilient, patient and emotionally intelligent
  • Experience with SEMH, behaviour support, youth work or care is highly desirable
  • A genuine interest in supporting pupils who need a different approach

Requirements:

  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Up-to-date safeguarding training
