We are currently seeking dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Teaching Assistants to work within specialist educational settings in the Burgess Hill area. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and young people who require additional support with their emotional wellbeing, behaviour, and learning.

The Role

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and support staff to provide tailored assistance to pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs. You will help create a positive, safe, and nurturing learning environment that enables students to engage with education and develop confidence, resilience, and independence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting pupils on a one-to-one basis and in small groups.
  • Assisting with the implementation of individual support plans and behaviour strategies.
  • Encouraging positive social interactions and emotional regulation.
  • Building trusting relationships with students to promote engagement and wellbeing.
  • Supporting classroom learning activities and adapting approaches to meet individual needs.
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and pastoral teams.
  • Maintaining accurate records and contributing to pupil progress reviews.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, behavioural challenges, autism, ADHD, or additional learning needs is desirable.
  • A patient, empathetic, and resilient approach.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, psychology, youth work, or health and social care are advantageous but not essential.
