Are you passionate about literacy and helping young people develop a love of reading?

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Literacy Support Assistant to join a specialist SEMH school located between Horsham and Billingshurst. This is a rewarding opportunity to work within the school’s library, supporting pupils with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including Autism, ADHD, and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

Our pupils may experience challenges such as trauma, PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance), high levels of anxiety, low self-esteem, and other mental health needs. We are looking for someone who understands the importance of building positive relationships and creating a safe, supportive environment where every child can thrive.

The Role

Working closely with both primary and secondary-aged pupils, you will:

  • Support students on a one-to-one and small group basis to improve their reading skills and confidence.

  • Assess and monitor pupils’ reading levels and progress.

  • Identify pupils who may require additional literacy interventions and support.

  • Encourage a love of reading and promote positive engagement with literacy.

  • Work within the school library to create an inclusive and welcoming learning environment.

  • Collaborate closely with teaching staff, SEN professionals, and pastoral teams to ensure pupils receive the support they need.

  • Maintain accurate records of pupil progress and contribute to review meetings where appropriate.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has a genuine passion for literacy and reading development.

  • Enjoys working with children and young people with SEND and SEMH needs.

  • Has experience supporting pupils in an educational, youth work, care, or similar setting.

  • Can build strong, trusting relationships with young people.

  • Is patient, empathetic, and resilient.

  • Has strong communication and organisational skills.

  • Holds HLTA status or has relevant experience equivalent to this level (desirable but not essential).
