Are you passionate about supporting young people who have struggled within mainstream education? Do you have the confidence, patience and resilience to build meaningful relationships with students who may find education challenging?
We are working with a specialist Alternative Provision in Crawley that supports secondary-aged students with a range of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The provision works with young people who may have been excluded from school, struggled to engage with mainstream education or become school refusers.
The aim is to help these students re-engage with education, rebuild their confidence and develop the skills they need to move forward positively.
This is a highly relationship-focused role. Rather than following the traditional National Curriculum, the provision focuses on life skills, personal development, emotional wellbeing and helping students develop the confidence to engage positively with education.
As an SEMH Support Worker, you will work alongside the member of staff leading sessions, helping to create a calm, positive and engaging environment where students feel supported and encouraged to participate.
Your responsibilities will include:
Building strong, trusting relationships with secondary-aged students.
Supporting students who may have experienced exclusion, school refusal or significant barriers to education.
Encouraging students to engage positively with activities and sessions.
Supporting the adult leading the session and helping maintain a positive learning environment.
Using appropriate strategies to support behaviour management.
Recognising when a student is becoming dysregulated and supporting with de-escalation.
Remaining calm and consistent when faced with challenging behaviour.
Encouraging students to develop confidence, resilience and independence.
Helping students develop important life and social skills.
Supporting students to understand and manage their emotions and behaviour.
Acting as a positive role model and providing consistency and clear boundaries.
The provision takes a practical and engaging approach to helping young people reconnect with education. Students are not simply sitting in a classroom following the National Curriculum — the focus is on preparing them for life, developing positive relationships and helping them find activities they can engage with.
The provision has facilities such as a boxing ring, which can be incorporated into activities, alongside opportunities for students to hear from professionals and members of the wider community, including the police and other guest speakers.
Every day can look different, and the successful candidate will need to be adaptable, enthusiastic and willing to get involved.
You do not necessarily need to be a qualified teacher. We are looking for someone who has the right personality, confidence and approach to work with young people who may present with challenging behaviour.
You will ideally be:
Confident working with secondary-aged young people.
Experienced working with SEMH, challenging behaviour, Alternative Provision or similar environments.
A strong communicator who can build rapport quickly.
Calm, patient and emotionally resilient.
Confident supporting behaviour management and de-escalation.
Able to establish clear and consistent boundaries.
Positive, enthusiastic and willing to get involved in activities.
Able to encourage students who may initially be reluctant to engage.
Comfortable supporting the lead adult during sessions.
Passionate about helping young people make positive changes.
Someone who understands that building the relationship often comes before the learning.
