SEMH Learning Support Assistant – Crawley

Location: Crawley, West Sussex
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 3:00pm
Pay: £15 per hour
Contract: Temporary, with temp-to-perm opportunities available
Start: ASAP

Are you confident working with secondary-aged students with SEMH needs and challenging behaviour? Do you have a good sense of humour, a thick skin and the ability to stay calm when situations become difficult?

We are looking for a Learning Support Assistant to join an Alternative Provision in Crawley, supporting secondary-aged students who may have experienced trauma and can display verbally challenging behaviour.

This is a rewarding but busy role where relationships, consistency and the ability to see beyond the behaviour are incredibly important.

The Role

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will:

  • Support secondary-aged students with SEMH and additional needs

  • Work with students who may have experienced trauma and difficult circumstances

  • Manage and respond appropriately to verbally challenging behaviour

  • Use humour and positive relationships to redirect negative behaviour

  • Help students understand and learn appropriate ways to communicate and behave

  • Support students with emotional regulation and developing positive coping strategies

  • Build trusting relationships while maintaining clear and consistent boundaries

  • Encourage positive behaviour and engagement with learning

  • Work closely with teachers and other staff to provide consistent support

  • Help create a calm, safe and positive environment for students

What We’re Looking For

The right person will be:

  • Confident working with challenging behaviour

  • Ideally experienced within SEMH, SEND, Alternative Provision, youth work, education or similar settings

  • Calm, resilient and able to remain professional when faced with difficult behaviour

  • Someone with a good sense of humour and a thick skin

  • Able to use humour appropriately to diffuse situations and redirect behaviour

  • Confident setting boundaries while maintaining positive relationships

  • Patient, consistent and emotionally resilient

  • Someone who genuinely wants to help young people make positive changes

You don’t need to be a teacher or have a formal teaching qualification. We are particularly interested in people who have the right attitude, resilience and experience of working with young people who can present challenging behaviour.

Why This Role?

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to build or develop their experience within SEMH and Alternative Provision.

The school works with young people who may have struggled in mainstream education, so your ability to build relationships, remain consistent and help students understand how to manage their behaviour will be incredibly valuable.

There is also the opportunity for the position to become permanent, making this a great route into a long-term role within SEMH education.

Interested?

If you have experience supporting young people with SEMH, trauma, challenging behaviour or additional needs, and you think your personality would be a good fit for this environment, we’d love to hear from you.

Apply today and let’s have a conversation about the role.
