About the Role

We are looking for a skilled and compassionate De-escalation Mentor to join the team at Brighton Alternative Provision Schools, supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and those at risk of exclusion from mainstream education.

This is a highly rewarding opportunity to make a lasting difference for children who benefit from additional support to manage emotions, behaviour, and relationships. You’ll work as part of a specialist team that helps pupils re-engage with learning and build positive pathways for the future.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs

  • Use effective de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour management techniques

  • Build strong, trusting relationships to support pupils’ emotional regulation and confidence

  • Promote engagement, motivation, and success in learning activities

  • Record incidents accurately and follow safeguarding and reporting procedures

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral leads, SENCOs, and external professionals


About You

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience supporting children or young people with SEMH or behavioural challenges (in schools, youth work, or alternative provision)

  • Be calm, empathetic, and resilient in challenging situations

  • Have strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • Be confident using restorative and relational approaches to behaviour

  • Be passionate about inclusion and supporting every young person to reach their potential
