About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate, proactive De-escalation Mentor to join our dedicated team at a Primary SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in Hastings. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young learners who need extra emotional and behavioural support.

As a De-escalation Mentor, you will help pupils manage their emotions, build resilience, and re-engage positively with their learning. You’ll work closely with teachers, pastoral staff, and external agencies to create a calm, safe, and supportive school environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils with social, emotional, and behavioural needs (SEMH) in small groups and 1:1 settings

  • Use positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies to defuse challenging situations

  • Develop pupils’ emotional regulation, communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Promote inclusion and engagement across all areas of school life

  • Record and report incidents accurately, following safeguarding and school policies

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals


About You

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Experienced in supporting children with SEMH or challenging behaviour (in school, youth work, or care settings)

  • Calm under pressure, empathetic, and patient

  • Skilled in de-escalation techniques and restorative approaches

  • Able to build strong, trusting relationships with young people

  • Committed to helping every child achieve their potential

Relevant qualifications (e.g. Team Teach, MAPA, or SEMH training) are desirable but not essential — training will be provided for the right candidate.
