English Teacher – SEMH School

A specialist school for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in Swindon is seeking a dedicated English Teacher to join their team.
The school supports students aged 7–17 years with a range of complex learning needs. All students have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) as their primary need, alongside additional diagnoses and needs including ADHD, Autism/ASC, dyslexia, dyscalculia and speech and language difficulties. Some students have also experienced significant childhood trauma.
The school takes a trauma-informed, holistic approach, working to remove barriers to learning, support emotional wellbeing and promote healing alongside academic attainment.
About the Role
As an English Teacher, you will:
- Plan and deliver engaging English lessons for students aged 7–17
- Adapt teaching and learning to meet a range of SEN, SEND and SEMH needs
- Support students to develop their literacy, communication and confidence
- Create a calm, structured and inclusive learning environment
- Build positive, trusting relationships with students
- Use trauma-informed and nurturing approaches to support engagement and emotional regulation
- Monitor progress and adapt teaching to individual learning needs
- Work closely with teaching assistants, pastoral staff and the wider team
- Contribute to the wider holistic development of students alongside their academic attainment
What We’re Looking For
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or relevant teaching qualification
- Experience teaching English, ideally within secondary or specialist education
- Previous experience working with SEN, SEND or SEMH students is highly desirable
- Strong understanding of differentiated teaching and individual learning needs
- Calm, patient and consistent approach
- Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills
- Ability to adapt teaching to students with complex needs
- Commitment to a trauma-informed and holistic approach to education
- Resilience, empathy and a genuine passion for supporting young people
Previous experience as an English Teacher, SEN Teacher, SEND Teacher, SEMH Teacher or Specialist Teacher would be beneficial.
