Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our dynamic educational team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting students with diverse needs, particularly those with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Key Responsibilities
- Assist in planning, preparing, and delivering high-quality lessons under the guidance of qualified teachers
- Provide specialized support for students with SEMH and Autism, adapting teaching strategies to meet their individual needs
- Collaborate with teachers to develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with special educational needs
- Monitor and assess student progress, maintaining accurate records and providing regular feedback to teachers and parents
- Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes student engagement and well-being
- Implement behavior management strategies and support students in developing social skills and emotional regulation
- Assist in the preparation of teaching materials and resources, including visual aids and sensory tools
- Provide one-on-one or small group support to students who require additional assistance
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities
- Supervise students during break times, lunch periods, and extracurricular activities
- Liaise with external agencies and professionals to ensure comprehensive support for students
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures
Qualifications and Skills
Essential:
- Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status or equivalent qualification
- Extensive experience working with children with SEMH challenges and Autism
- In-depth knowledge of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
- Strong understanding of child development and learning processes
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting children with diverse needs
- Proficiency in using technology to support learning and record-keeping
- Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing student needs and situations
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Current DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check
Desirable:
- Degree in Education, Psychology, or a related field
- Additional qualifications in SEMH or Autism support
- Experience with alternative communication systems (e.g., PECS, Makaton)
- Training in positive behavior management techniques
- First aid certification
