Full-time Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our dynamic educational team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting students with diverse needs, particularly those with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, preparing, and delivering high-quality lessons under the guidance of qualified teachers
  • Provide specialized support for students with SEMH and Autism, adapting teaching strategies to meet their individual needs
  • Collaborate with teachers to develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with special educational needs
  • Monitor and assess student progress, maintaining accurate records and providing regular feedback to teachers and parents
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes student engagement and well-being
  • Implement behavior management strategies and support students in developing social skills and emotional regulation
  • Assist in the preparation of teaching materials and resources, including visual aids and sensory tools
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students who require additional assistance
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities
  • Supervise students during break times, lunch periods, and extracurricular activities
  • Liaise with external agencies and professionals to ensure comprehensive support for students
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures

Qualifications and Skills

Essential:

  • Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status or equivalent qualification
  • Extensive experience working with children with SEMH challenges and Autism
  • In-depth knowledge of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
  • Strong understanding of child development and learning processes
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting children with diverse needs
  • Proficiency in using technology to support learning and record-keeping
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing student needs and situations
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Current DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check

Desirable:

  • Degree in Education, Psychology, or a related field
  • Additional qualifications in SEMH or Autism support
  • Experience with alternative communication systems (e.g., PECS, Makaton)
  • Training in positive behavior management techniques
  • First aid certification
