Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) specializing in Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) to join our dynamic educational team. This role is crucial in supporting students with SEMH needs, working collaboratively with teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for our learners.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialized support to students with SEMH needs, both in and out of the classroom
- Plan, deliver, and assess learning activities for individuals and small groups under the guidance of teaching staff
- Develop and implement strategies to support students’ social, emotional, and mental health needs
- Collaborate with teachers to create and maintain a positive, inclusive learning environment
- Monitor and record students’ progress, providing regular feedback to teachers and parents
- Participate in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behavior support plans
- Assist in the management of challenging behavior, using appropriate de-escalation techniques
- Liaise with external agencies and professionals to ensure comprehensive support for students
- Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the school
Qualifications and Skills
Essential:
- HLTA status or equivalent qualification
- Extensive experience working with children and young people with SEMH needs
- In-depth understanding of SEND, particularly in relation to SEMH
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong behavior management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Proficiency in using technology to support learning
- Flexibility and adaptability in approach to supporting diverse learner needs
Desirable:
- Additional qualifications in SEMH or related fields
- Experience in delivering interventions such as ELSA, Thrive, or similar
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and child protection
- First aid qualification
