Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 16:00 (Term Time Only)

A primary school in Worthing is seeking a Higher Level Teaching Assistant to join their KS1 team. In this role, you will support pupils by leading lesson cover and small group interventions to help children access the curriculum. You will work with pupils who have additional learning needs, particularly those with Autism Spectrum Condition and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The role is ideal for a teacher who wishes to step back from full class teaching, a current HLTA, or a teaching assistant with a proven record of delivering the curriculum effectively.

You will be responsible for working alongside class teachers and the wider support team, ensuring that each pupil receives the structured assistance they require. You must be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the challenges children with SEN face and show practical examples of how you have helped them overcome barriers to learning. Your ability to work both independently and as part of a team will be essential in creating a structured and secure learning environment for all pupils.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide lesson cover and small group interventions to support pupils with additional needs
  • Work closely with class teachers to implement individualised support plans
  • Assist in delivering aspects of the curriculum to ensure all pupils can access learning
  • Monitor pupil progress and report outcomes to the teaching team
  • Uphold the school’s safeguarding and behavioural policies consistently

Essential Experience/Attributes:

  • Previous experience working with children that have special educational needs
  • Demonstrated ability to work with pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • A DBS check registered on the update service or a willingness to obtain one
  • A patient, empathetic and nurturing approach
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work within a team
  • The ability to remain calm in challenging situations and respond to the needs of the pupils
  • Must be able to understand and follow the school’s safeguarding procedures and behavioural policies
  • Qualifications relating to education, special educational needs, counselling or psychology are not essential but will be looked upon favourably
