SEMH Teaching Assistant / Learning Support Assistant

Location: Littlehampton, West Sussex
Hours: Monday, Thursday & Friday: 8:30am–3:30pm | Tuesday & Wednesday: 8:30am–4:15pm
Contract: Full-time, term-time

Daily Rate: Competitive, dependent on experience

Do you have a calm, patient and resilient approach and the ability to build genuine relationships with young people who may have struggled in mainstream education?

We are working with a specialist SEMH school in Littlehampton, supporting boys aged 8–16 with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

The school provides a nurturing and structured environment where pupils are supported to develop their confidence, independence, emotional regulation, life skills and academic abilities.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Teaching Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Behaviour Mentor or SEMH Support Worker who wants to make a genuine difference.

About the Role

As a Teaching Assistant / Learning Support Assistant, you will work alongside teachers and the wider school team to support pupils both academically and pastorally.

You will help pupils overcome barriers to learning while encouraging positive behaviour, independence and personal development.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting pupils to access their learning and the curriculum

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support where required

  • Supporting pupils with SEND and SEMH needs

  • Building positive and trusting relationships with young people

  • Supporting pupils with challenging behaviour and emotional regulation

  • Encouraging positive behaviour and behaviour for learning

  • Helping pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence

  • Supporting pupils who may become dysregulated, anxious or disengaged

  • Helping pupils communicate their needs and make positive choices

  • Working alongside teachers to provide personalised learning support

  • Supporting pupils with social and emotional development

  • Helping pupils recognise their strengths and celebrate their achievements

  • Supporting pupils to develop important life skills

  • Encouraging pupils to become more independent and prepared for their future

The Pupils

The school supports young people with a range of SEMH, SEND and behavioural needs, including:

  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)

  • Challenging behaviour

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Communication difficulties

  • Special Educational Needs (SEND)

  • Difficulties engaging with mainstream education

  • Social and emotional difficulties

  • Additional learning needs

The school is designed to provide additional support for young people who may find traditional mainstream education challenging.

Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, challenging behaviour, Autism, ADHD, communication difficulties, trauma or attachment needs would be a real advantage.

However, previous specialist school experience isn’t essential. The school is looking for someone with the right attitude, resilience and ability to build positive relationships.

Experience with SEMH, SEND, challenging behaviour, Autism, ADHD, youth work, mentoring, care, residential support or Alternative Provision is desirable but not essential.
