About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Full-time Learning Support Assistant to join our team, specializing in Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) support within a secondary school setting. This role is crucial in providing essential support to students with SEMH needs, ensuring they can access the curriculum and thrive in their educational journey.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one and small group support to students with SEMH needs, tailoring approaches to individual learning styles and requirements.
- Collaborate closely with teachers and other staff members to develop and implement effective strategies for supporting SEMH students in the classroom.
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of a positive, inclusive learning environment that promotes emotional well-being and academic success.
- Monitor and record student progress, maintaining accurate and up-to-date documentation on interventions and outcomes.
- Participate in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behavior support plans.
- Provide emotional support and guidance to students, helping them develop coping strategies and self-regulation skills.
- Facilitate social skills groups and workshops to enhance students’ interpersonal abilities and emotional intelligence.
- Assist with the implementation of de-escalation techniques and positive behavior management strategies.
- Liaise with parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure a holistic approach to student support.
- Attend and contribute to team meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential:
- Minimum of a Level 3 qualification in a relevant field (e.g., Education, Psychology, or Youth Work)
- Proven experience working with secondary school students with SEMH needs
- Strong understanding of SEMH challenges and their impact on learning and behavior
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents
- Patience, empathy, and a non-judgmental approach
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Proficiency in using technology to support learning and record-keeping
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
Desirable:
- Degree in Education, Psychology, or a related field
- Additional qualifications in SEMH support or interventions
- Experience with specific SEMH interventions (e.g., CBT, mindfulness, or art therapy)
- Knowledge of SEND Code of Practice and relevant educational policies
- First aid certification
