Start Date: ASAP
Contract: Temp to Perm – 12 working weeks

Are you an experienced Learning Support Assistant, Teaching Assistant or Support Worker with a strong background in SEMH and SEND?

We are working with a fantastic SEMH school in Lancing, supporting pupils of upper primary age, who are looking for a confident and experienced Learning Support Assistant to join a brand-new class.

This is an exciting opportunity to become an important part of a new classroom team, working alongside a newly qualified teacher. The school is looking for someone who can bring their experience, knowledge and confidence to the classroom and provide a strong level of support to both the teacher and pupils.

The Role

You will be supporting pupils with a range of social, emotional and mental health needs, helping them to engage with learning, develop positive relationships and manage the challenges they may face throughout the school day.

The pupils can experience periods of dysregulation and challenging behaviour, so this role requires someone who is calm, patient and resilient. You will need to be able to remain consistent and supportive even when situations become difficult.

This is a role for someone with thick skin who understands that behaviour is communication and who won’t take challenging comments or behaviour personally.

You will also play an important role in supporting the newly qualified teacher as they establish routines, expectations and relationships within the new class.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has strong previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, Support Worker or similar

  • Has solid experience working within SEND and/or SEMH settings

  • Has experience supporting children with challenging or dysregulated behaviour

  • Is confident managing situations calmly and professionally

  • Has a thick skin and doesn’t take challenging behaviour personally

  • Understands the needs of pupils with SEMH and the reasons behind their behaviour

  • Is consistent, patient and emotionally resilient

  • Can build strong, trusting relationships with pupils

  • Is confident working alongside and supporting teaching staff

  • Can use positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques

  • Is proactive and able to use their own initiative

  • Is passionate about helping children overcome barriers to learning

Why this role?

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced LSA or support worker who wants to make a genuine difference within an SEMH setting.

You’ll be joining a new class and classroom team, giving you the opportunity to help establish a positive, consistent and supportive environment from the beginning. Your experience will be particularly valuable in supporting a newly qualified teacher as they develop their confidence within the SEMH environment.

The role is offered on a temp-to-perm basis, with the opportunity to secure a permanent position after 12 working weeks.

If you’re an experienced SEND/SEMH practitioner who is resilient, calm under pressure and passionate about supporting children with complex emotional and behavioural needs, we’d love to hear from you.
