Location: Newhaven
Pay: £14.25 per hour
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday
Contract: Long-term, with potential for permanent employment

Are you passionate about supporting young people who may need a little extra encouragement to engage with education?

We are looking for a Learning Mentor / Pupil Engagement Mentor to join a supportive education setting in East Sussex, working with young people who may have SEND, SEMH needs and/or experience of trauma.

This is a rewarding role for someone who can build genuine, trusting relationships with young people and help them overcome barriers to learning.

The Role

You will work closely with students who may find mainstream education challenging, providing consistent support and encouragement to help them re-engage with learning.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building positive and trusting relationships with young people.
  • Supporting students to return to lessons and engage positively with their learning.
  • Providing encouragement, mentoring and emotional support.
  • Helping young people manage barriers that may be preventing them from accessing education.
  • Supporting students who may have experienced trauma or have SEND/SEMH needs.
  • Encouraging positive behaviour, confidence and independence.
  • Working closely with teachers and other members of the support team.
  • Communicating effectively with colleagues to ensure students receive consistent support.
  • Creating a calm, safe and supportive environment for young people.

About You

We would particularly welcome applications from individuals with experience in:

  • Youth work, mentoring or coaching.
  • Supporting young people with SEND or SEMH.
  • Working with young people who have experienced trauma or challenging circumstances.
  • Education, alternative provision, residential care or community support.
  • Sports coaching or other roles involving positive engagement with young people.

Most importantly, you will be patient, approachable, resilient and able to build strong relationships with young people. You will need to work well as part of a team and be confident adapting your approach to meet individual needs.

Previous experience within an education setting is desirable but not essential for the right person. We are particularly interested in people with strong transferable experience who genuinely want to make a difference to young people’s lives.

Why Apply?

  • £14.25 per hour
  • Full-time, long-term opportunity
  • Monday to Friday
  • Opportunity for a permanent position
  • Supportive school environment
  • Rewarding role working directly with young people
  • Excellent opportunity to develop your career within SEND/SEMH education

If you are passionate about helping young people overcome barriers and believe you could make a positive difference, we would love to hear from you.
