SEMH 1:1 Teaching Assistant (Brighton, East Sussex)

Contract: Full-Time, Term-Time Only
Location: Brighton, East Sussex

Job Summary:
We are seeking a compassionate, proactive, and resilient 1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant to support a pupil with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in a specialist or mainstream setting. This full-time, term-time role is ideal for someone calm under pressure, confident in behaviour support, and passionate about helping pupils overcome barriers to learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a pupil with SEMH needs

  • Build positive, trusting relationships to encourage engagement

  • Implement behaviour support plans and use de-escalation strategies

  • Support emotional regulation and help pupils develop coping skills

  • Assist with learning tasks, activities, and personalised interventions

  • Collaborate with the class teacher, SENCO, and pastoral team

  • Maintain a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment

Requirements:

  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, trauma, or behavioural needs

  • Strong behaviour management and relationship-building skills

  • Patient, consistent, and able to remain calm in challenging situations

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities

  • Ability to follow guidance while using initiative

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing
