Role Overview

We are seeking a motivated, patient, and supportive Support Assistant to work with students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) across schools in Hailsham. The role focuses on supporting learning, promoting positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing, and increasing pupil engagement. You will play an important role in helping pupils stay focused, feel supported, and develop the skills they need to succeed both academically and socially.

You will work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams to ensure pupils feel safe, motivated, and fully able to engage with their education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils with SEMH, ASD, ADHD, and other SEND needs through 1:1 and small-group support.

  • Encourage positive participation in lessons and school activities.

  • Use calm, supportive approaches to help pupils regulate emotions and behaviour.

  • Identify barriers to engagement and collaborate with staff to develop effective strategies.

  • Build strong, positive relationships with pupils to boost confidence and motivation.

  • Assist teachers in maintaining an inclusive, structured, and supportive learning environment.

  • Record observations, engagement levels, and contribute to pupil support plans.

  • Support classroom routines, personalised tasks, and learning activities.

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams, parents, and external professionals.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experience working with children or young people, ideally within SEND, pastoral support, or behaviour-based roles.

  • Strong communication skills, patience, and emotional resilience.

  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in challenging situations.

  • A flexible, proactive approach suitable for a cover-based role.

Preferred:

  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service.

  • Understanding of SEND strategies, emotional regulation, and engagement-support approaches.

  • Experience within mainstream or specialist educational settings.

Benefits

  • Flexible cover work with preference for full-week availability (Monday–Friday).

  • Opportunity to make a genuine difference to pupils who benefit from consistent support and encouragement.

  • Supportive and welcoming school environments.

  • Valuable experience for those pursuing careers in education, psychology, youth work, or SEMH support.
