Full-time Teaching Assistant – SEND and Autism Specialist

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Full-time Teaching Assistant to join our inclusive educational team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and autism support, as well as general teaching assistant duties. This role is crucial in providing comprehensive support to students with diverse learning needs and contributing to a positive, inclusive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

SEND Support

  • Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students with SEND
  • Collaborate with teachers and SENCO to develop and adapt learning materials for SEND students
  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to SEND students during lessons
  • Monitor and record progress of SEND students, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary meetings to discuss student progress and support strategies
  • Assist in the administration of assessments and exams for SEND students, including providing necessary accommodations
  • Support the development of social skills and emotional regulation for SEND students

Autism Support

  • Implement specialized strategies and interventions for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
  • Create and maintain a structured, predictable environment to support students with ASD
  • Use visual supports, social stories, and other autism-specific tools to enhance learning and communication
  • Assist in developing and implementing behavior management plans for students with ASD
  • Support the development of social skills and peer interactions for students with ASD
  • Collaborate with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and other specialists to provide comprehensive support
  • Stay informed about current research and best practices in autism education

General Teaching Assistant Duties

  • Support teachers in planning and delivering lessons across the curriculum
  • Prepare and organize classroom materials and resources
  • Assist with classroom management and behavior support for all students
  • Provide general support to students during independent work and group activities
  • Supervise students during break times, lunch, and other non-classroom activities
  • Assist with the display of student work and maintenance of a stimulating learning environment
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities
  • Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers, under the guidance of the class teacher
  • Assist with school events, trips, and extracurricular activities

Qualifications and Skills

Required

  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a Teaching Assistant, with a focus on SEND and autism support
  • Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent
  • Demonstrable knowledge of SEND strategies and interventions
  • Experience working with students with autism spectrum disorders
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding principles and procedures
  • Excellent communication
