Teaching Assistant – Alternative Provision

Location: Burgess Hill
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–3:30pm
Contract: Full-time, term-time
Role: Teaching Assistant / Learning Support Assistant
Daily Rate: £100 per day

Are you passionate about supporting young people who may have struggled within mainstream education?

Do you have a calm, patient and resilient approach, and the ability to build positive relationships with pupils who may find education challenging?

We are working with a welcoming and supportive Alternative Provision setting in Burgess Hill, supporting pupils from primary age through to KS4. The provision gives young people the opportunity to re-engage with education, rebuild confidence and develop the skills they need for their next steps.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to make a genuine difference and develop their experience within Alternative Provision, SEMH and behaviour support.

About the Role

As a Teaching Assistant, you will work alongside teachers and the wider support team to help pupils access learning and develop the confidence and skills they need to progress.

You will support pupils both academically and pastorally, helping them to understand and manage their behaviour while encouraging them to make positive choices.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting pupils in the classroom and during practical activities

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support where required

  • Helping pupils engage with their learning

  • Building positive and trusting relationships with young people

  • Supporting pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs

  • Encouraging positive behaviour and behaviour for learning

  • Helping pupils develop emotional regulation and self-awareness

  • Supporting pupils to develop confidence, resilience and independence

  • Helping pupils recognise their strengths and make positive choices

  • Working closely with teachers and other members of staff

  • Supporting pupils with life skills and personal development

  • Encouraging pupils to take responsibility and accountability for their actions

  • Helping pupils prepare for their next stage of education, training or employment

The Pupils

The setting supports young people who may have experienced significant barriers to accessing mainstream education.

This can include pupils who are:

  • At risk of exclusion or have experienced permanent exclusion

  • Struggling with SEMH needs

  • Displaying challenging or dysregulated behaviour

  • Finding it difficult to engage with traditional education

  • Experiencing difficulties with attendance or relationships

  • Struggling with emotional regulation

  • In need of additional SEND support

The centre has a strong focus on behaviour intervention, using calm, consistent and compassionate approaches to help young people develop self-regulation, respect, accountability and resilience.

Experience working with challenging behaviour, SEMH, SEND, trauma, youth work or young people who have struggled in mainstream education would be a real advantage.

However, we’re also interested in candidates who have the right attitude, personality and resilience. You don’t necessarily need previous Alternative Provision experience.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Patient, calm and consistent

  • Passionate about supporting young people

  • Confident building relationships with pupils

  • Resilient when faced with challenging behaviour

  • Able to remain calm and professional in difficult situations

  • Positive, encouraging and proactive

  • Able to set clear boundaries while remaining nurturing

  • Adaptable and willing to think creatively

  • Comfortable working as part of a wider team

  • Reliable and committed

  • Interested in SEMH, SEND and Alternative Provision

  • Able to look beyond behaviour and understand the individual needs of the young person

Experience with challenging behaviour, SEMH, SEND, autism, ADHD, youth work, mentoring, care or similar settings is desirable but not essential.

We would particularly welcome applications from people who have previously worked as Teaching Assistants, Learning Support Assistants, Behaviour Mentors, Youth Workers, Support Workers, Residential Support Workers, Sports Coaches or in similar roles supporting young people.

More Than Just a Classroom Role

This role is about much more than simply helping pupils complete their work.

The provision places a strong emphasis on personal development, life skills, emotional development and preparing young people for their next steps. Pupils may be working towards returning to mainstream education, moving into specialist provision, further education, training or employment.

You will have the opportunity to become a positive role model for young people who may not always have had positive experiences of education.

For the right person, this can be an incredibly rewarding role.

Why This Role?

If you’re looking for a role where you can build genuine relationships, support young people through challenges and see the impact you can have, this could be a fantastic opportunity.

You don’t need to have all the answers. What matters is that you’re patient, consistent, willing to learn and genuinely want to help young people move forward.

Best Fit, Every Time.
