About the Role
A vibrant and inclusive secondary school in Eastbourne is seeking a skilled and dedicated Teaching Assistant with knowledge of Braille to join its team. The successful candidate will provide essential support to students with visual impairments, ensuring they have equal access to the curriculum and can take part fully in school life.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing in-class and one-to-one support for students with visual impairments.
- Transcribing and adapting learning materials into Braille and other accessible formats.
- Supporting students in developing independent learning skills, confidence, and self-advocacy.
- Liaising with teaching staff, the SENDCo, parents/carers, and external agencies to ensure the highest quality of support.
- Maintaining accurate records of student progress and support provided.
Person Specification
- Proficiency in Braille reading and transcription (Unified English Braille preferred).
- Experience of supporting children or young people with visual impairments, ideally in an educational setting.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and a commitment to inclusive education.
- Ability to adapt materials creatively to meet individual needs.
- Relevant qualifications (such as Braille certification or a Teaching Assistant qualification) are desirable but not essential for the right candidate.
